Phenomenon Sessions place educators inside genuine intellectual uncertainty — not simulated, not scripted — in direct contact with the real professionals who live inside the problems we want students to explore.
This is not a field trip. This is not a guest speaker. This is a structured experience designed to produce the cognitive state that precedes real learning — and to make that state visible to the teacher experiencing it.
The core problem we're solving
STEELS and 3D science ask teachers to facilitate phenomena-driven learning — but most teachers have never experienced it as a learner. We ask them to teach through uncertainty they have never inhabited. The result is compliance without comprehension.
Phenomenon Sessions put teachers in the water. The phenomenon is real. The expert is real. The discomfort is real. The debrief names what just happened — and maps it directly to the classroom experience we're asking teachers to create.
What makes this different
Real problems
Not pedagogical simulations. Actual challenges from industry, manufacturing, and community partners who face them daily.
Real experts
Not curriculum consultants. Engineers, conservation ecologists, fabricators, infrastructure planners — people who don't have a lesson plan.
Real uncertainty
Problems are selected specifically because they may not have a clean answer. The point is the process, not the solution.
Named metacognition
Every session closes with explicit connection back to STEELS practices — labeled in the moment, not in a handout three weeks later.
The STEELS connection
Phenomenon Sessions are not adjacent to 3D science — they ARE 3D science, experienced from the learner's seat. Each session activates all three dimensions simultaneously:

The goal is not for teachers to become experts in the phenomenon. The goal is for teachers to remember what it feels like not to know — and to build classrooms that honor that feeling rather than eliminate it.

Running a Phenomenon Session
This guide walks you through the full arc of a Phenomenon Session — from expert recruitment to debrief close. Do not skip the metacognitive frame. That's the whole point.
Before you start: expert prep
Your expert is the most important variable. They need one briefing call (30 min) before the session. The goal: make sure they bring a real problem, not a presentation about their job.
Tell your expert exactly this:
Common expert failure modes to coach around:
- Showing a PowerPoint about their company instead of presenting a problem
- Having a "right answer" ready to reveal at the end like a magic trick
- Simplifying the problem to make it feel accessible — resist this
- Answering questions immediately instead of redirecting to the group
Session arc
Expert presents the phenomenon — ideally with artifacts, data, images, or physical samples. No framing of "what we're going to learn today." Just: here's a situation. What do you notice? What do you wonder?
Facilitator captures notice/wonder on a shared surface (whiteboard, miro, chart paper). Do not sort or curate yet.
Groups of 3–4 construct an initial explanation — drawn, diagrammed, written, or built. The constraint: they must commit to a claim before receiving additional data. This is the discomfort zone. Don't rescue them.
Facilitator circulates. Listen for: "we need more information" (good), "I don't understand the problem" (redirect back to the artifact), "what are we supposed to do here?" (normal — don't answer it).
Expert provides one additional piece of information — a data set, a constraint, a variable they didn't share. Groups revise their models. The key: they must show what changed and why.
This is where real thinking happens. Watch for groups that don't change anything — that's a discussion point in debrief.
Groups post models. Gallery walk — everyone leaves sticky notes on other groups' models (questions, not critiques). Then expert responds to each model, not to "correct" but to engage. Where were they close? Where did they miss something he/she didn't expect them to miss?
Facilitator leads the explicit debrief. The sequence matters:
- What did you feel at each phase? (Confusion, frustration, curiosity, surprise) — name these
- When your students are in your classroom, which of these feelings are you creating? Which are you eliminating?
- What would you have to change about your practice to create the conditions that produced what you felt today?
- Name the STEELS practices you enacted — without having been told to enact them
Close with: "This is what 3D science feels like from inside it. Your job is to build this for your students, without telling them what it's called."
Common facilitation mistakes

| Choosing a phenomenon with a clean answer | Teachers feel like they "got it" and the vulnerability disappears | Vetting question: "Would your team argue about this?" If no — pick a different problem. |

The honest problem with most science PD
Teachers leave workshops with frameworks, vocabulary, and annotated standards documents. They return to classrooms and do what they've always done — because the PD never changed what they believe learning feels like.
STEELS and 3D science require teachers to facilitate uncertainty. Most PD eliminates uncertainty. That's the gap.
